  Oshkosh 2019 Article

During the 2019 EAA annual Oshkosh Airventure, Composite-FX had a writer come by our display booth and do a story about Composite-FX and our helicopter. The story was published in the January 2020 monthly magazine (page 77) and features pictures of the first Turbine engineered and built at Composite-FX (also flown at the show). The article also has an embedded article about our newest dealer in Tennessee Dave Story (storeyaviation@yahoo.com). Its a great piece of world wide advertisement and we owe a thanks to Beth Stanton (bethestanton@gmail.com) for taking the time to do the story and coordinate the photo shoots.

  Mosquito for my daily commute

I live in Western Europe. We get 16.5 hours of daylight in the Summer, and 8 hours of daylight in the Winter.

Monday to Friday, I drive 50 miles to work. It takes me about 1hr 10mins each way, so I spend about 2.5 hours driving to and from work.

I drive an 18-year-old Ford Ka, and I get something like  35 -45 mpg.

I'm trying to see what my options would be... how it would work out if I got a mosquito for my commute.

The distance from my home to my work, as the bird flies, is 38 miles.

A friend of mine flies microlight planes and he tells me that this wouldn't work out. He says yoi probably can't fly a mosquito in the dark, and taking into account bad weather, I might be only able to fly to work about 40% of the time.

  Fuel pump vs gravity fed?

After wanting an ultralight helicopter for decades I've gotten a Mosquito Air with a Rotec 503 / dual Bing 54's.  Question... I've seen videos & pics of BOTH pump (and gravity) feeding fuel to the carbs. And I've seen gravity ALONE feeding fuel to the carbs.  Whats the latest on this? Is there a relationship to this choice and the "notorious" Rotec engine stoppage I've heard about??

  Engine “oil leak” - 285

I noticed that oil seems to be leaking between the cylinder head and the block.  Bottom cylinder, port side.  It is not a big leak and the oil seems to have been thru the combustion process as it is dark.  At first it looked more like an exhaust leak (black - discolored soot on the case at the split between the head and the block) but then there was enough (over several hours) to run down to the bottom of the cylinder and “pool”.

I checked the nut/bolt tightness of all the ones that were associated with this area /  issue, cleaned up the area, ran the engine and it reappeared.

Suggestions?  Is this a big concern?  Do I need to pull the cylinder and replace a gasket?  Is there a gasket here or just metal to metal?

  FAA redacted 64 mph level flight max speed for ultralight airvehicle helicopters?

I ran into a reference online that the mosquito XEL helicopter was a FAR part 103 legal helicopter.   My search led me to Composite-Fx forum for answers.

What puzzled me, was FAR 103 specifications for the ultralight air vehicle category has maximum speed in level flight of 64 miles per hour, yet in specifications for the mosquito XEL helicopter, it says maximum speed 70 miles per hour.

This is a variation of only six miles per hour, but still exceeds maximum set by FAR 103.

This begs the question: did the FAA wave 64 mph maximum speed requirement for ultralight helicopters?

  Hover - Pedal force

Can anyone confirm or provide input as to the required left pedal force (not deflection) required for an IGE hover?  I'm used to an R22 where the pedals feel light and pretty easy to push.  In the xe285, during a hover, I need constant left pedal pressure/force... To the point were my left leg starts to get a bit fatigued.  Are your mosi's like this too?  I have plenty of control authority, it's just the constant push that's required to keep the nose straight.  Looking forward to your input.
